It's finally clicked!

I'm a big boy now! (^_^)

Puu and I have been trying to get Lukie potty trained for a while now. At first, these attempts were stop-and-go. He didn't seem very receptive, we would become frustrated and give up, only to try again later.

After Lukie returned with Puu from their trip to Thailand, we decided to be more persistent with his potty training.

Simply asking him to tell us when he had to "go" didn't really work. Big surprise there, huh? So, we decided to try having him go diaper-free whenever he was at home. The idea was that he wouldn't be able to ignore the sensation without a diaper to absorb everything. Suddenly, just peeing would become a big deal because it would make a mess and feel rather unpleasant. And that's how it worked.

Using this method meant we had to clean up a lot of puddles and carpet stains, and do a lot of extra laundry, at first. That was a lot of work, along with keeping on top of him and constantly reminding him to tell us before the pee or poop came out. (He only had a few poop accidents, thankfully, and they were confined to his underwear -- again, thankfully.) The messy nature of it led to us sometimes getting lazy and letting him wear a diaper to give ourselves a break.

Inevitably, while doing this, as with many other hurdles of child-rearing, the question arises, "Is it working?" Progress is minimal, and you wonder if he will ever learn. You feel frustrated. That's how we felt.

Then, on Friday, March 19, 2010, it just seemed to click. This was after a few days of us really sticking with the program. In the morning, I walked him to the potty and he peed. Later in the day, for the first time, he walked over to me and said, "It's coming!" He kept his underwear dry the entire day. He peed four times in the potty, and pooped twice. Every time, he told Puu or myself that he needed to go. We were amazed, and let him know that we were so proud of him. "I'm out of diapers now," he said.

Well, not entirely. He still wears a diaper to sleep at night, of course. And he's had a few accidents in the days since -- these happen when he's too preoccupied and doesn't want to stop what he's doing. But it's clear that he "gets it," that he is ready for the potty.
